Cravings

1 John 2:16-17a “For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. 17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave.”

Salty snacks. Sweet treats. Caffeinated beverages. We all have cravings. Some are food related. Some are physical behaviors. Others can be drug related. How do we resist the cravings? Is it dangerous to engage the craving? Has it taken over our bodies and is assaulting our minds? As humans, we are weak and fleshly. Some days we are strong and are able to resist. Even for longer periods. Great. Other days, we are weak and give in.
As Christians, we have the Holy Spirit giving us strength with each new day while also remaining in the flesh. Whom are you feeding each day? The Spirit or the flesh? It is a constant daily struggle, a battle to see who wins. Resist the devil. Turn away from your evil desires, your sinful cravings.
In Galatians 5:16, Paul says, “ So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.” Let the Holy Spirit lead, guide and direct your thoughts, your goings, your desires. Crave God’s words and His teachings. Engage in Christian fellowship and Bible studies. Share your struggles. Allow other Christians to pray for you, to come along side you. Let us take to heart the teaching of the apostle Paul in Galatians 5:24-25: “ Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.”
