Friday=Fri-yay! Do the rest of the days get that same celebration? I’ve never heard someone call Monday=Mon-yay! or Thursday=Thurs-yay! Why does Friday get the celebration? Yes, it’s rhetorical. We’ve worked hard all week and the weekend is at hand. Plans are made. Alarm clocks are off. Playtime.
What if we changed our mindset. What if every day began with “yay,” no matter the day of the week. What if we changed our attitude towards our workdays. Giving thanks for each day we have breath. Using the most of every minute we have whether at work or play. So yes, it’s Fri-yay but let’s make every day a yay-day!
Psalm 143:8 “Let the morning bring word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I entrust my life.”
Lists for work. Lists for shopping. Lists for activities. Lists keep us organized, focused, scheduled. I make lists. I cross out completed tasks. It helps me remember what I need to do to get things done, to accomplish the task. As I age, I find if I don’t write it down, mark it on my calendar or schedule it in my calendar app, I will forget it.
Lists are helpful in our Christian walk, as well. We have upcoming events scheduled, meals to prepare for a loved one, classes to teach, friends to visit. God expects us to work in service for Him, to further His kingdom. As we serve others, we are serving God. Let’s not be so focused on the lists, though, that in serving God, we miss the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do and He will show you which path to take.”
Psalm 100:4 “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.”
Getting away. Seeing new sights. Finding adventure. Many of us enjoy travel. Yes, there are preparations to make, bags to pack, chores to be done. But once you hit the road, excitement builds. You plan your days, adjust when necessary, enjoy time away.
Coming home can be a let down. You’ve enjoyed the sights, the people. You are coming home to reality. Unpacking is never quite as fun. Chores add up. Only so much time left to do everything.
Once you walk through the door, though, what a feeling. So thankful to be home. Among the familiar- the shower, the bed, the dogs. You sit down and just relax. Ahhhh!
What a blessing from God to be able to travel. To enjoy His creation. Counting it as a blessing, home or away, having a thankful heart.
1 Chronicles 16:34 “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.”
Morning workout. More like morning freakout. I am making a commitment. But… I couldn’t find my online workout, the internet was slow, my husband was asking me questions… blah, blah, blah led to morning freakout. I found the workout, completed it. Then… I had to apologize to my coach, my husband, my God! Not how I wanted my day to start, but I am better now.
We all have these freakout moments. None of us are immune. I didn’t like myself very much this morning. I don’t want to be like this. Each day, I am striving to be more Christ-like. Some moments are success. Other moments are fail. I don’t need to let this freakout set the tone for my day. I’ve sought forgiveness. I am seeking God. I am moving forward. I am not staying in the “freak out” mode today. I am reading God’s word and letting His truths wash over me as I find calm in His presence.
Romans 7:15 “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” Romans 7:24-25 “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
I’m looking at my toes. Four of them no longer have any nail polish on them. Two weeks ago they were pretty. Fun in the sand and sun, hiking, walking barefoot, has taken their toll. I could look at myself and see exactly what I have been neglecting. Sometimes the neglect comes from leading busy lives. As a mom of three sons, there was a season in my life where job, family took priority and housework was hit or miss. Sometimes neglect comes in the form of depression- not caring about keeping up appearances. Not mindful of the junk we are putting in our mouths, our bodies. Sometimes neglect comes in the form of working too much, thinking about work 24/7 and letting it consume us. It is good to reflect. Evaluate: eating habits, exercise, activities I’m involved in, career. Do I do something about it or maintain my neglectful attitude. I try to live a healthy lifestyle: being active, mindful of what I eat but I’m not overly focused on these things. I want to have a balance in my life. I want to stay active, eat healthy, have regular doctor visits. I want to enjoy my career but I need to know when I’ve put in enough of me to be able to walk away, leave it at the office. Enjoy time with my husband, family, friends.
God wants us to live healthy, as well. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” He also wants us to have a prayer life. To have worship time. Study time. Fellowship time. Again, finding the balance to serve, to love, to teach, to study, to share, to praise, to be alone with God. To grow in knowledge and wisdom, to be more Christ-like in our walk. Ready to forgive others as we, too, have been forgiven. Have you neglected your spiritual life, gotten bored, in a funk? Dust off your bible or download a bible app. Start today with a daily devotional. Call up that friend that has been inviting you to church. Don’t know what to wear or how to act? Wear clothes- it runs the gambit: dress, skirt, pants, jeans. Take a deep breath and renew your spiritual life. Let God be your focus. Come to know your first love again. As you draw near to God, you will find peace, rest, joy in Him.
Romans 12:1-2 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Entertaining. Good vs. Evil. Hobby vs. Addiction. Is it a sport? My family recently had a discussion (debate) over where video games fall. My sons are grown now. They can do as they please. It is out of our control. One of my sons gave my husband a tutorial on a game my husband and three sons played together years ago. It brought them together then. Gave them a common interest. Father-Son bonding. It is making a comeback and two of my sons have been showing my husband, their dad, the updated version. It has brought them together again. Gave them a common interest again. Father-Son bonding again.
When our children were young, video games were for entertainment. Family time. As they grew into teenagers, video games became more popular. However, it isolated them from family time and length of time spent playing became longer. We put time limits on. Our sons weren’t being secretive. They actually showed us what they were playing, wanted us to try it out, too.
Life is busy. Life is stressful. I get it. Humans need hobbies, activities they enjoy to release the stress. Finding purpose in life. Forming relationships, spending quality time with loved ones are important, as well. Begin your day with God. Prayerfully consider how He wants you to spend your down time. Square it up with God. Find peace in your decision.
Ephesians 5:15-17 “So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise.Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.”
Driving home, on a road in the middle of nowhere. No signal on my phone. No access to the web, Facebook, text messages. It’s quiet. My hands are free. My mind is able to just think. Think about my life, marriage, children friends, family, job. Lots of available time. Listening on the radio to one of just a few stations that are able to reach us. Mac Powell, a favorite christian artist of mine, lead singer of Third Day. Now doing a “Mac Powell and Family Reunion” tour. One of my favorite songs by Third Day, “Cry Out To Jesus.” I know the back story of the song from hearing it at a Third Day concert but he quickly shares the story. A couple telling Mac of their son who is struggling with life, with addictions and he wants to end his life. He, too, is in the middle of nowhere. Decides to turn on the radio to help him pass. The only station he gets is a Christian station and on the radio playing is “Cry Out to Jesus.” The son hears God through this song and does just that. He cries out to Jesus, pours out his heart and turns his life over to God.
In the middle of nowhere, in the thick of things, wherever you are, God has a signal, always strong. There is no place to run, to hide that God is not there. What are you going through today? I pray you cry out to Jesus. Pour out your heart, your troubles, your hurt to Him. He can heal your brokenness. He can make you whole again. God is able to do more that we can even imagine. When you surrender your life to Him, He will teach you of His ways through His word. Look for a church to plug into that preaches His truths. Fill your heart and mind with His word. His signal to us, in written form, is a book that gives life to all who cry out to Jesus.
Psalm 61:1-4 “O God, listen to my cry! Hear my prayer! From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety, for you are my safe refuge, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me.Let me live forever in your sanctuary, safe beneath the shelter of your wings! “
Bridges are connectors. Over water, they connect two pieces of land. Over land, they take you over something: roads, railroad tracks. I recently had the opportunity to walk a path through the woods that had five plus bridges. They were short, taking me over creeks and streams. Some were made of wood with stairs and railings. Others were fallen logs put together with another log as a railing. No matter their construction, I was thankful for them. It made the walk a little easier to traverse.
In spiritual terms, Jesus is our bridge to God. The cross is connecting us, through Jesus, to God. Our faith, our trust in Jesus and His finished work on the cross, gives us access to God, connecting the earthly to the heavenly. To access the Bridge, put self behind, confess your sins, and believe that Jesus is The Savior, The Bridge, that puts you in a right relationship with God. Once you do, He is with you, guiding your path, walking alongside, directing your thoughts, actions, and attitudes to do His will each and every day.
1 Timothy 2:5-6: “For, there is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity-the man Christ Jesus. He gave His life to purchase freedom for everyone.”
A walk in the woods. A hike. Walking with a purpose. A strenuous walk. Uphill. Looking out. Amazing views. Getting to the top. Catching our breath. Turn to the right and go to the falls. Turn left and keep going up. To the falls first. Relax. Breathe. Enjoy the view. The amazing power of water as it cascades down the rocks. Onward. Upward. Lots of steps. My fear of heights kick in. Stay focused. One foot in front of the other. Get to the top. Step back and look out.
We see lots of families on our excursion today. Most parked at a higher elevation, knowing their young ones would only be able to walk so far. Lots of smiles, laughter, memory making on the trail. Some tears… “Mom, I’m tired. I can’t go on.” Encouragement. Rest. Here we go.
For some, these walks need an end point: What will we see? What will we do when we get there? For others, including myself, it is the joy of being out there, walking in the woods, on an adventure. It’s like being a kid again when you were outside with friends, exploring, biking, walking. I find that same joy as I walk these trails and see these sights.
Focal point. End point. Where is your joy point? Do you have to go somewhere, be with a certain someone? Joy comes from within. Bubbling inside you. Knowing God intimately brings joy. Puts a smile in your heart. Abiding in His presence, no matter where you are. He is there! Being present with God, wherever we are, is our joy point.
Romans 15:13: “I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust Him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Feet in the sand. Tea in the cup. Wave rolling in. Taking the opportunity to slow down, reflect. Enjoying the company of family. The laughter of children, stories with my husband, son and daughter-in-law about life, love, events. Realizing that the hustle and bustle of life is waiting for me when I return so I am savoring this time away, time with loved ones. Not feeling guilty about the pace. Thankful for these precious moments that are so fleeting but so important in my life today.
James 4:13-15: “Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”
